A couple of days in Copenhagen
From the colourful buildings along the waterfront, to the magic of Hans Christiann Andersen dotted throughout the city - Copenhagen is definitely worth a visit.
The City
We instantly fell in love with Copenhagen. The people were so friendly, and there just seemed to be a happy vibe about the place. There were bicycles everywhere instead of lots of cars, and the city felt clean. Walking was easy, and we downloaded a walking tour app to get our bearings and enjoy the sights.
It felt like a fairytale city, with its many statues, a lot dedicated to Hans Christen Andersen, and even a castle - Rosenborg Castle was definitely worth a visit. The Little Mermaid is a famous attraction, though I personally thought it was a little underwhelming. It is still worth a look.
The waterfront was my favourite place, with its colourful buildings and many choices to sit down and enjoy a drink or bite to eat. From here we took a one-hour canal cruise and enjoyed seeing the city from a different perspective.
Where we stayed
Every now and then, we discover one of those hidden gems that makes a great trip more unforgettable. I can honestly say The Nimb Hotel fits this description perfectly. From our arrival early in the morning, when they took us to their restaurant and made sure we had really good coffee and breakfast, to upgrading our room to a suite - because it was my birthday, the service was exceptional. I hadn’t told them it was my birthday - they’d simply worked it out from my passport!
The surprises continued - when we got back to our suite after our first day of exploring, there was champagne, a birthday cake, birthday card and the Danish Flag all set up on the table - so unexpected and so beautiful.
The Nimb Hotel backs onto the Tivoli Gardens - home to the third oldest amusement park in the world, and where Walt Disney got his inspiration. Unfortunately for us, the Gardens were closed on the two days we were in Copenhagen, as they were setting up for Halloween. The staff at The Nimb Hotel went out of their way to organise a private free tour of the gardens for us, so we wouldn’t miss out.
Finally, I have to give special mention to the cocktail bar at The Nimb Hotel. Continuing with the fairytale theme, they have a cocktail storybook, and the cocktails are so unique and exquisite it would be criminal not to try one. I did enjoy my Jungle Book experience.
Where we dined
We chose a Michelin-recommended restaurant for dinner. Høst was a cozy Nordic restaurant - the food was spectacular, and the service excellent. I would highly recommend Høst if you want high-quality modern Nordic cuisine without paying the big prices of some of the Internationally renowned restaurants. The scallop was a standout dish.
I also wanted to mention that we stopped along the waterfront for smørrebrød - traditional Danish open sandwiches, with fillings that included pickled herring. It was most enjoyable just sitting there, watching the world go by.
Copenhagen was certainly a pleasant surprise. I would love to come back to this beautiful city and explore more of the surrounding countryside. For us, though, it was time for our next adventure - Cruising to Norway, in search of The Northern Lights.
