A Day in Porto
We only had one day in Porto, but it was enough to get a taste of this colourful, vibrant city - beautiful buildings, winding streets, the Douro, and, of course, a little port along the way….
Porto in a VW Kombi.
I love to do things a little differently, so instead of the usual bus tour, we opted for a VW Kombi experience. This was a private tour for up to 8 people - perfect for our group. Our guide was knowledgeable and funny, and we even stopped for coffee and pastal de nata along the way. We explored different neighbourhoods, and stopped at some great vantage points for incredible views across the city. It was a fun and unique way to get our bearings, and I would highly recommend it.
Our afternoon.
With the sun shining, and the streets alive with music and people, it was easy to just go with the flow. We found a spot by the banks of the Douro River, settled in for lunch and took in our surroundings. With nowhere to be, the atmosphere encouraged a very long lunch. We finished the afternoon with a mandatory port tasting session.
Our evening.
Keeping things simple after a Michelin-starred dinner the previous night, we explored the other side of the Douro River. With lights dancing on the water, and the street music filling the air, it made for a magical evening - topped off perfectly with a sensational seafood pasta and a glass of local wine.
One day was nowhere near enough to really explore Porto, but it certainly gave us a taste of the city. Colourful, lively, relaxed and very easy to enjoy - I’d happily come back for more.
For us, Porto was the starting point for our next adventure - Walking the Coastal Camino to Santiago de Compostela.
